Park Rapids 18U softball team splits pair with Perham
After seeing a late rally fall short in a 7-6 loss in the first game, the Park Rapids 18U fastpitch softball team salvaged a split against Perham with a 1-0 win in the second game Monday night at the Area High School field.
In the opener, Perham jumped out to a 5-0 lead by scoring three runs in the first inning and twice in the second.
In the third, Ellie Ulvin singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Tara Johanning's RBI single as Park Rapids cut the gap to 5-1.
Perham countered in the fourth with a run for a 6-1 lead before Park Rapids put together a five-run rally in the fifth to tie the game. Ulvin walked, Johanning singled and Rilee Michaelson walked to load the bases. After Amber Berndt walked to bring in a run, Shailyn Pachel cleared the bases with a three-run double. Kylee Pachel's RBI single tied the game at 6-6.
Park Rapids threatened in the sixth when Cassidy Bera led off with a single and Ulvin walked with one out, but both runners were stranded on second and third.
Perham then scored the winning run in the seventh off Michaelson, who went the distance.
Michaelson threw a shutout in the second game, which was called after four innings because of rain.
Park Rapids scored the only run in the second when Shailyn Pachel singled and scored on Haley Pickar's RBI single.
Michaelson singled in the first and Bera singled in the fourth as Park Rapids managed only four hits.
Park Rapids concludes the season with a doubleheader at Detroit Lakes starting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday (July 10).
